Residential Life

Living Where You Learn

Villanova Preparatory School is the only Augustinian co-ed boarding school in the United States. The cornerstone of Villanova for over eighty years, the residential life program brings students, staff and faculty together in a supportive and nurturing environment. Above all the residential life program seeks to instill in all the core values of Augustinian education – Love, Truth and Community.

Unlike many other boarding schools, Villanova offers a residential program in which the staff has only one responsibility: caring for the students. Every resident assistant is charged with encouraging and nurturing each individual student to strive for excellence in all areas of life. Whether helping a student with her/his homework, playing basketball in the gym or counseling a student, the resident assistant continuously works to develop each student’s potential.

Students are very involved in the life of their dorms. A dorm council meets weekly to discuss issues affecting residents including helping resident assistants in planning weekend activities and occasionally aiding in the menu selection.

A typical school night is structured to provide the students with ample time for study and other activities. Every night before a school day, study hall and independent study is held from 7:00 – 10:30 with a half hour break for relaxation and refreshments. Study hall is supervised by the Director of Residential Life and resident assistants with regular assistance from faculty members.  Students have the responsibility along with encouragement from the resident assistants to discipline themselves in regular study habits, so that they can succeed academically. A dorm computer lab with Mac computers is available during study hall and on weekends, and both residence halls have wireless Internet capability.

Weekends are a special time for the residents, when they can participate in activities, sports, visit family and friends, meet students from other schools, and enjoy the Ventura, Santa Barbara, Los Angeles metropolitan area. Villanova provides activities on most weekends for its residents, such as the boarder dance, movies, meals out, plays in Los Angeles and other school trips arranged by the faculty.

Ultimately, Villanova’s resident program offers its students a complete experience. Our residents are challenged to succeed in all areas of life and are required to participate in at least two clubs or athletic activities each semester in order to give and receive the most of their Villanova experience.

Our two residence halls (Glynn Hall and Cantwell Hall) house approximately twenty-eight girls, and sixty-five boys. Each dorm has its own representatives on the dorm council as well as a representative from each school year. Each dorm has its own lobby where students can gather to study in groups or to socialize. A recreational room is next to the boys’ dorm and has a large screen TV, multiple smaller TVs for video games, refrigerator, microwave, and various game tables. Each dorm has its own for-fee laundry facilities. Each dorm has telephones although most students bring their own cell phones. All girls in Glynn Hall will have a roommate, and most boys in Cantwell Hall will have a roommate. Single room priority in Cantwell Hall begins with fourth year seniors.
