All text should be written in third person, passive voice (when the subject receives the action - that is, has something done to it. The passive voice uses a form of the helping verb "be" before the past participle of the main verb.)
Example:
Active Voice: Hurricanes destroy many homes each year.
Passive Voice: Each year many homes are destroyed by hurricanes.
Format
Text: All reports must use the lab template including underlining, capitalizing, and centering, as demonstrated in the lab template. Text must be typed in Times font, size 12 point. All text should be written in third person prose, including the procedure and data (avoid "cook-book directions" or lists).
Results: If a graph or picture is used, it must be explained in text that is placed before the graph or picture. (The reader should not have to interpret the results of the graph or purpose for picture.) All data tables must include units only in the headings.
General Discussion: The implications of the lab should be explained. This should relate the results back to the purpose. An error analysis should explain to the reader how a repeated lab could be improved. Inappropriate remarks include: "This was a fun lab." -- "My lab partner's inability to read and interpret data is why we had a large error."
