Technology

A Villanova graduate is ideally a critical and conceptual thinker who can access, evaluate, and use information for problem solving while efficiently using and adapting to changing technology. The use of technology is an ongoing integral part of Villanova's core curriculum.

Villanova's internal network is comprised of both a wireless network and a wired Ethernet/fiber-optic network, which connects the entire campus to the Internet--including dormitory rooms and classrooms--via a joint T-1 line and Cable connection. Wireless Internet access is available in the dormitories for resident students after school and on weekends. All students and faculty have e-mail accounts and a private, roaming profile account for file storage on the academic fileserver. The roaming profile account may be accessed from any computer at school.

Computers are located in various locations throughout the campus. There are two designated labs with 22 computers respectively. Each classroom has a computer with a wired and/or wireless Internet connection. LCD projectors are available for classroom demonstration. Laser printers are located in the Computer Lab, classroom buildings, Resource Center, ESL Resource Center, and dormitories for student and faculty printing.

Students are encouraged to use school provided equipment such as scanners, digital cameras, digital video recorders, or LCD projectors for any school project.

In order to accommodate the various types of computers used by our community, Villanova stresses learning computer concepts. All software applications are cross-platform (software application screen looks the same on both IBM/PC or Macintosh and all files from either hardware configuration may be used interchangeably).

Software applications for word processing, spreadsheets, photo editing, desktop publishing, keyboarding skills and email are installed on school maintained computers. Students must supply software for their personal computers. Villanova supplies the software for Internet access and email.
