Behold, you will conceive in your womb and bear a son, and you shall name him Jesus.
Looking at Mary through a modern lens it never ceases to amaze me of her faith and bravery. Even in our world today we shame women for having children out of wedlock but Mary would have gotten a fate much worse than shaming. But at a mere 13 or 14, the what ifs did not keep Mary from saying yes to the angel. I find solace in the fact that this how Christ chose to enter into this world. For without Mary, there would be no Jesus, no salvation, no fully human and fully divine being. To be fully human Jesus needed to enter into this world like all of the rest of us. And God chose one of the most vulnerable of society to usher him in.
The salvation of us all rested on the shoulders of an unwed teenage mother.
This passage bring me hope twofold. It serves as a reminder of the importance of women in society and in the Church. And that the Church would not exist if not for Mary. It also highlights the strength and faith that exists within those at the margins of society and how important those individuals are to us all.
